SITE DIRECTORS

Magdalena Salas Burguera, MA

Ms. Salas is both the Son Peretó project leader and the director of the Manacor Historical Museum. Her work has focused on buildings used for rituals during Mallorca's Iron Age and published several papers on the prehistory of the islands. As director of the museum, Ms. Salas has led other similar projects such as S'Hospitalet Vell, one of the most interesting prehistoric sites on the island.

Mateu Riera Rullan

Now finishing his Ph.D. on the Byzantine Monastery of Cabrera (Mallorca) at Barcelona's Autonomous University, Mr. Riera is an experienced archaeologist dealing with the Late Antiquity and Islamic periods. Aside from co-directing the Son Peretó project since its inception in 2005, he is also the co-director of the Cabrera project.

Miguel Ángel Cau, Ph.D.

Dr. Cau is a research professor at the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA), an associate professor of Archaeology at the University of Barcelona and co-director at Son Peretó.

He specializes in late antiquity Mediterranean insular systems, late Roman cooking wares and the application of archaeometry to ceramics. In addition to Son Peretó, Dr. Cau co-directs the excavation of Pollentia in Mallorca, the Roman villae of Sa Mesquida, as well as the excavations of Illa del Rei and the geophysical survey of Fornells, both early Christian basilicas, in Menorca.

Antoni Puig, Ph.D.

Mallorca-native Antoni is a veteran member of ArchaeoSpain, leading our teams in Son Peretó and at Monte Testaccio in Rome. He recently completed his doctorate at the University of Barcelona, a thesis on the Romanization of Mallorca.

While in Barcelona, Antoni worked on several archaeological research projects in conjunction with museums in Austria, Germany and Italy. He also excavated for several years at Roman sites such as Clunia in Burgos and Pollentia in Mallorca.
