Site Directors

Carlos Sanz, Ph.D.

Dr. Sanz has been performing extensive research at the site of Pintia for more than 25 years. A professor of Archaeology at the University of Valladolid, he founded the Federico Wattenberg Center for Vaccean Studies which oversees all the research work at Pintia. During this time Dr. Sanz has worked diligently to uncover, preserve and disseminate this site's historical and archaeological heritage.

Fernando Romero, Ph.D.

Dr. Romero is a professor of Prehistory at the University of Valladolid with years of experience working in the Duero region of Spain. His work has focused on Iron Age peoples, including the excavations of several fortifications in the Soria province and Vaccean settlements in Valladolid.

Both Drs. Sanz and Romero have been instrumental in bringing about the development of the site’s research facilities and a local museum as well as encouraging the enthusiastic involvement many local and regional public and private entities.

International coordinators

Ana Isabel Garrido

Ana earned a degree in History from the University of Valladolid, and she has worked on several pre-Roman and Roman sites, including Pintia. Over the last 10 years she has managed and led several excavations.

Álvaro Román

Álvaro has been digging at Pintia since 2000 and has been co-director for the past two years. With a History degree from the University of Valladolid he has also worked on other sites in Spain and Portugal. At present Álvaro is working on his Ph.D. project: pottery production in Pintia's artisan neighbourhood of Carralaceña.

Cristina Górriz

Cristina was named co-director of the Pintia excavation last year after working on the site since 2002. She holds a History degree from the University of Valladolid, and now Cristina is preparing her doctoral thesis on wine and banquets during the prehistory of the middle Duero region.

Ernesto Diezhandino

Ernesto has been dedicated to the study of Pintia since 2002, and he has worked on several other sites in Spain and Italy as well (focusing on Archaeozoology). His current investigation is the Archaeology of Death and the Pintia necropolis. Ernesto holds a History degree from the University of Valladolid.
