Santiago Martínez Caballero

Santiago Martínez earned his degrees at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and has been part of the Tiermes excavations for 14 years. For the past few years Martínez has worked tirelessly to raise the necessary funds to continue the many archaeological projects at Tiermes and to increase public awareness about the site. He is also the co-director of the Roman excavations in Frejellae, Italy and in Duratón, Segovia. Martínez is currently a curator at the Museo Provincial de Segovia.

In 2000 the regional government named Martínez to oversee and direct the archaeological site of Tiermes. From 2003-2006 Martínez directed the European Union’s LIFE project at Tiermes.

International coordinator

Unai Aurrekoetxea

Unai has been working at Tiermes as the international group leader since 2004, although his experience in excavation at the site dates to 2000. He has also led ArchaeoSpain groups at Pintia and Pollentia, in addition to working on other Roman excavations around Spain. Unai lives and works in Bilbao and Edinburgh.

Unai has an MA in Archaeology from the University of Deusto, Spain.
