The participants at the archaeological excavation of Torralba d'en Salort on the island of Menorca will work as field crew alongside research archaeologists from the University of Barcelona. In the summer of 2006, the object of our work will be the continuing excavation of part of the settlement's residential area. ArchaeoSpain members at this site will contribute to the research of the Talayotic culture, a megalithic prehistoric people that lived in the Balearic Islands for nearly 3,000 years.

ArchaeoSpain participants will take part in all aspects of the archaeological process, including excavation, land survey, mapping, photography, and the conservation, drawing, cataloguing and exhibition of artifacts.

Our participants will engage in all archaeological activities during the program. While Spanish-speaking ability is not a prerequisite, we will be immersed in the language daily. Thus ArchaeoSpain hopes that our students use this time to learn some of the language or improve their spoken Spanish.

In spite of the usually pleasant weather of this beautiful island, work will be demanding due to the summer heat and the physical nature of the excavation. Thus participants should be in reasonable physical condition and in good health. Nevertheless, we will complement the hard work with a daily effort to experience Spain away from the dirt and stone – either by relaxing on Menorca’s beaches, sitting at a café bar or by touring several pre-historic, Roman and Medieval sites of interest.

In cooperation with students' universities, ArchaeoSpain will offer credits toward their majors and degrees.
